Gravel driveways can built with several types of top coats: 3/4 crushed gravel, ledge pack, tri-pack, crushed concrete and Ground Hot Top.
For a gravel driveway to stand up it needs a good base. I prefer to use 1 1/2" crushed gravel for the base to provide good drainage and stability. Then I will top coat with one of the prefered materials that the customer may request based on their budget.
This sloping gravel driveway installation which was originally for construction site access only. It needed a base layer and new top coat. Good thick base of crushed gravel for stability with a nice crown and a crushed gravel top coat with a stone dust mix.
I had to add a few swales for drainage at the top of the driveway to control the erosion. There is water coming down 3 hills that meet their driveway entrance as they are in the valley.

Pet owners will bring their pets here to do rehab from injuries or surgeries by having them in the pool for low impact exercises.
This was installed here to control the extreme amount of water flowing in this low lying area close to this gravel driveway that was installed.
